“In Psyche’s mother-house, they kept the urns of ancestors in the walls, mortared between mudbrick, so that in every room the walls and floors spoke, and nobody was left alone, without some embrace. In the walls on the outside, wild bees often made hives. There was a place by the east-facing door, the one oriented exactly to the winter solstice sunrise, where a great-great grandmother had mortared in an empty urn, grooved inside, to invite the roaming bees to make their comb. They came and went each year. It was open on both sides, so the bees moved about the House like people. They also spoke to the ones in the walls. They gave messages from the dead to the living in dreams.”
